The National Council of Women of Canada's (NCWC) Open Letter: Protect Canada's Water - Protect Our Health

"It's Not About Your Water or My Water -- It's About Our Water"

Across Canada, more people are questioning the quality of their drinking water, with threats compounded by AI data centres and PFAS, to name just two. Concerns continue to grow about exposure risks, water rights and the UN declaration that the world is water bankrupt. Protecting source waters, federal oversight and accountability must be a priority in protecting public health.

On September 25, 2025, Statistics Canada released a Core Public Infrastructure Survey that included startling information: almost 13,700 km of asbestos cement pipes are delivering drinking water into people’s homes —impacting huge populations across the country. Do you live in one of these provinces? Are you sure your water is safe for you and your loved ones?

According to the Report:

  • British Columbia has the most reported asbestos cement water pipes, with 4,261 km.
  • Alberta is second with 3,286 km.
  • Saskatchewan reported 2,757 km.
  • Ontario reported 1,259 km.
  • Manitoba reported 1,006 km.
  • Quebec reported 864 km.

Protect Canada’s Water — Protect Our Health: Beyond the possibility of microscopic asbestos fibers in what appears to be a clear glass of water, there is also an urgent need to recognize that ingesting or inhaling asbestos fibers can cause cancers, to assign responsibility for oversight and accountability to remove and replace asbestos cement water pipes, including those abandoned in place creating toxic waste sites; to protect source waters; while raising the standards of weak and varied provincial drinking water guidelines; to include comprehensive testing for asbestos; and stronger federal oversight based on the precautionary principal; to ensure Canadians are safe from other contaminants and chemicals that collectively do not meet legally enforceable regulations set by other G7 countries or the EU.
