While it’s never a good thing when a company feels it is necessary to make cuts, some decisions are so egregious that they must be questioned. Such is the case with the recent decision by NBC Sports Philadelphia to cut Philadelphia Phillies television broadcaster Gregg Murphy.

The reasons for Murph’s retention are numerous. His journalistic skills speak for themselves. He handles the role of field reporter professionally with an approachable, empathetic touch. He is equally as comfortable and polished interviewing a coach or player after a game as he is interviewing attendees of a game, whether they are dignitaries, relatives of a player just called up or simply an everyday fan. In addition, he makes the transition when needed into the play-by-play role in the broadcast booth seamlessly and effortlessly, providing descriptive details of the on-field action while having chemistry with his broadcast partner, all of which makes for an informative, entertaining experience for the viewer.

Murph’s commitment to the fans and Philadelphia are just as impressive as his broadcasting skills. Even when working with a short window of time getting ready for an upcoming segment, he always makes time to chat with fans and pose with fans for pictures, often letting a youngster hold the broadcast microphone in the photo, much to that youth’s delight. Beyond the ballpark, Murph’s charity work with efforts such as The Ben to The Shore Bike Tour show his selflessness with worthwhile causes and investment in the community.

Perhaps most importantly, by all accounts, he’s just a good guy. While the status conferral of covering an MLB team may go to the head of some, his down-to-earth warmth and charisma has endeared him to fans everywhere. Whether it’s an engaging “Minute with Murph” segment or the good-natured back-and-forth ribbing with colleagues during a broadcast, he is always entertaining, and the Phillies’ broadcasts are much more enjoyable with his presence.

While it is understandable the current conditions may not be appropriate for having traditional sideline reporters, it would certainly seem plausible some new interaction could be created utilizing technology to keep fans engaged and utilize his skill set during broadcasts. Maybe virtual watch groups where Murph interacts with fans during games and polls the audience on relevant topics? Perhaps some “behind the scenes” alternate game views where fans can see how Statcast is utilized to generate in-game graphics? Whatever the assignment, Murph would no doubt tackle it with his engaging demeanor and skill set while providing knowledgeable, entertaining insights to the audience.

With the current state of things in the country and around the world, the year 2020 has already given many of us more than enough sadness, heartache and disappointment. We the undersigned ask the powers that be who make such decisions not to add to that list and instead please retain Gregg Murphy as part of the Philadelphia Phillies broadcast team.
