WHAT IS THE ABORTION BAN IN EL SALVADOR AND WHAT ARE THE SPECIFICS OF IT: In El Salvador abortion is completely banned with no exceptions. This means that even if the pregnancy is a result of rape and incest or when the mother’s life and health is at risk, abortion isn’t an option.

El Salvador’s total ban on abortion comes with penalties ranging from 2 – 50 years in prison. The ban in El Salvador is so strict that even women who suffer miscarriages or stillbirths can be accused of an abortion and be charged for aggravated homicide facing 30 – 50 years in prison.

The mothers aren’t the only ones who can are affected by these laws. Medical professionals who perform abortions can face 6 – 12 years in prison and can be barred from practicing medicine and family members who support women in getting an abortion may also face a 2 – 5 year imprisonment.

A CASE OF A MOTHER DENIED AN ABORTION: A 16-year-old girl came into the hospital with a high-risk pregnancy after being raped, Dr Ramirez was a doctor who attended to her being unable to do anything to try and help her as the best thing would have been an abortion. The baby was born 2 months premature and has developmental issues. The mother being so young was very poor and will struggle to support herself and the baby.

Another case in El Salvador is a 9-year-old girl who became pregnant through abuse and was unable to have an abortion therefore putting her life at risk.

BAD TREATMENT OF THESE WOMEN: Mirna, a Salvadorian women was sentenced to 12 years and 6 moths for having a miscarriage and says that she spent 6 days sleeping on the bare floor. Women who have miscarriages even whilst they are traumatic are often treated badly and many women who were interviewed said things such as that they weren't allowed a lawyer, weren't aloud to be present or speak at their hearing, didnt get told their rights and were treated like an animal.
