The Issue

We DEMAND a better deal that will help create REAL WATER SECURITY for the entire Navajo Nation and FUTURE GENERATIONS!

On January 26, 2016, the Navajo Nation Council PASSED Legislation 0412-15 to approve the Navajo Utah Water Rights Settlement Agreement without consideration of how this will impact ALL Navajo Nation Chapters and Future Generations. Below is a list of key concerns that needs to be addressed in the Settlement Agreement.  This water settlement constrains and hinders any real effort towards sustaining a permanent homeland for Navajo people.

•   81,500 acre-feet/year (AFY) – NO clear quantification of percent surface water and percent groundwater

•   NO clear quantification of the value of water that has been waived, which amounts to about ~85,000 AFY

•   NO clear definition of  “permanent homeland”

Free, Prior, and Informed Consent: The entire process, including the lack of disclosing key documents of the agreement, violates the “Free, Prior and Informed Consent” of the Diné People.
