On Wednesday 26 May, Nationwide contacted local representatives, Councillors and the MP about their proposal to close the Roman Road branch of Nationwide in August. They are suggesting that Nationwide customers could go to the branch in Stratford, Aldgate or Hackney.

Losing this branch would mean there was only 1 bank left on Roman Road Market - reducing the options for local residents who need to use the services of a local branch, or force customers to travel long distances.

Nationwide is a mutual society, founded by like-minded people coming together to help each other to save, which should be run in the wider interests of it's members. We welcome the online banking offer that Nationwide has developed but Nationwide's own figures state that 25% of the Nationwide members registered with this branch are only using this branch. This is alot of people who will have to visit another branch.

We are calling on Nationwide to revisit the decision to close this branch. We would like Nationwide to consider other options which make sure there is a still an branch open on Roman Road.
