NOAA: Reinstate All Marine Mammal Disentanglement Programs

Those who perform marine mammal disentanglements are highly trained and understand the risks involved. Joe Howlett, a disentanglement expert from Canada, was fatally injured during a disentanglement of a critically endangered North Atlantic right whale. Marine mammals become entangled 100% due to human activity. In cases in which the animal cannot shed the gear without human assistance, their only chance for survival is receiving help from those brave individuals, like Mr. Howlett, who understand this and are willing to put their lives on the line to save them. It is disheartening that NOAA chose to suspend disentanglements performed by trained professionals at a time when this work is so necessary. Mr. Howlett deserves a better legacy than suspending the critical rescue work that he dedicated his life to. Summer is a very busy disentanglement season and there are so many mammals that will die due to this decision to suspend this rescue work. Please sign this petition to let NOAA know that they need to reinstate the marine mammal disentanglement program to include the right whales ASAP.
