Center for Biological Diversity started this petition to National Marine FIsheries Service and

Southern Resident killer whales are on the brink of extinction. After losing three more individuals over the summer, this beloved, critically endangered and culturally revered population is down to just 73 animals.

We can help by creating a protected area in the heart of their prime summer habitat that would provide the orcas with the peace and quiet they need to eat, rest and recover.

Please join us in calling for creation of a Whale Protection Zone to give these animals a fighting chance at survival.

Highly intelligent, family-based Southern Resident killer whales face three main threats: not enough salmon to eat, exposure to toxic contaminants, and too much underwater noise in their Salish Sea home. Orcas use highly developed echolocation skills to communicate, navigate and forage for salmon. Increasing noise and disturbance is limiting their ability to locate food and engage in other behaviors essential to their survival.

While restoration of salmon habitat will be critical to the orcas' long-term recovery, they need help now.

Urge national fisheries officials to create a Whale Protection Zone for Southern Resident killer whales.
