The Issue

The Destin Charter Boat Association is working to bring attention to the over population and increased interactions with these Apex Predators. In the last five years, there has been an explosion in most all sharks stocks in the Gulf of Mexico. Fishermen are at the point where their interactions with these Apex Predators are at almost every fishing spot. As a group that works with federal and state regulators we support and promote science based approaches to managing our fisheries. Unfortunately, there is a lag in time and a limit to the capabilities of stock assessments in our fishery management world. Grassroots efforts such as this petition are a vital key to draw the attention of regulators to problems that are occurring on the water in real time. There is as delicate balance in our ecosystem that helps maintain sustainability for all species. The over population of any species, especially one that exerts predication, can cause a sever imbalance and effect other species' ability to maintain healthy stock levels and high spawning potential. Please join us in alerting NOAA/NMFS of the interaction and abundance we are all seeing on the water. Common sense regulations are needed to control this explosion in growth and bring balance to our ecosystem. We want an independent stock assessment to be conducted so we may address the issues we face with the overpopulation.
