National Letterbox Scandal

The Issue

Across the UK, families are being denied something that should never be taken away: a connection to their children. Court-ordered adoption letters, written by birth parents to their children, are meant to preserve a child’s identity, history, and emotional wellbeing. Yet these letters are being destroyed, withheld, or ignored by the very agencies responsible for safeguarding them.

This crisis first came to light in Scotland, when Birthlink in Edinburgh admitted to shredding letters sent by birth parents to their children. Since then, it has become clear that this is not an isolated incident, families across the UK are left in the dark, with no confirmation that letters are delivered, preserved, or read.

This is a national issue affecting thousands of families and children in care. Parents are unable to maintain contact through letterbox arrangements, and children are being denied an essential link to their past and their identity.

This petition calls for:

🎭 A UK-wide independent review into how adoption letters are handled

🎭 Full transparency from all adoption agencies and local authorities

🎭 National standards and accountability to ensure court-ordered letters are delivered and safeguarded

🎭 Assurance that every child and parent has access to the contact promised to them by the courts

Children and families deserve answers. They deserve accountability. The National Letterbox Scandal must be investigated and addressed across the UK.
