Rehabilitation of the Bonifacio and Katipunan Revolution Monument and Liwasang Bonifacio

Rehabilitation of the Bonifacio and Katipunan Revolution Monument and Liwasang Bonifacio
The Issue
Manila City is a home of numerous historical sites and monuments. These sites and shrines give us a peak of our history. It somehow narrates to us a significant event that happened in our past. One of the most important events in the Philippine History is the Philippine Revolution wherein Filipinos united with a goal to resist colonialism.
One symbol of the Philippine Revolution was the Bonifacio and the Katipunan Revolution Monument, this is dedicated in remembrance of the Filipino revolutionary, Andres Bonifacio and the Katipunan’s role in the Philippine Revolution. This artwork is located near the Manila City Hall and was made by Filipino Sculptor Eduardo Castrillo.
Another historical site is the Plaza del Fortin, its current name Liwasang Bonifacio, was named after a revolutionary leader Andres Bonifacio who founded Katipunan during the Spanish colonial rule. This plaza is a popular site of protests and demonstrations as it is one of four freedom parks in Ermita, Manila.
As time passes by, these historical monuments and sites seemed to get less attention from the Local Government of Manila. It is very evident especially in Bonifacio and the Katipunan Revolution Monument that it is not much taken care of despite of its location that is near the Manila City Hall. It can be seen that flags around the monument are torn and already fading. The Philippine flag symbolizes our country in general, much respect should be given to the flag that there is a specific Executive order for the Philippine Flag. According to the National Historical Commission Tattered, faded or worn-out flags should be replaced immediately.
Another evident scenery is that around the monument there are informal settlers leaving their wastes and garbage there as well. The monument has also been vandalized which is not good for something that represented a big part of our history. These monuments must be rehabilitated and cleaned. In addition to that, barricades should be provided so that people are limited in going near the monument to lessen further damage to the site.
Let us all contribute to the rehabilitation of two of our most beautiful historical sites. These symbolize are history and it is our duty to give respect and maintain it.
