As the world is fighting to minimize Global warming and Climate change consequences, local Governments and Authorities are busy in cutting giant trees and forests in the name of development.
NH-13(Solapur-Mangaluru Highway) passes through Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary in Shivamogga District of Karnataka. Sanctuary and its surrounding area have semi evergreen and moist deciduous forests. This land is home to many endangered and threatened species like Elephant, Tiger, Wild dogs(Dhole), Pangolin, King Cobra, Malabar Pied Hornbill and Kempholey Night Frog are just few to name. Widening of this road will destroy the Wildlife Corridor between Bhadra Tiger Reserve and Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary, which is more dangerous for the conservation and development of wildlife in this region. Even experts believe this region as wildlife corridor for Tigers and Elephants(http://www.thebetterindia.com/25164/sanjay-gubbi-expanding-tigers-habitats/
Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary is just beside NH-13, and is last hope for large number of migratory birds in this region. Widening of this road disturbs the migratory birds breeding sites, and will impact badly on the eco-system of this region.
Now, phase-1 of this project (road from Kanehalli near Shivamogga to Ashwini wana in Gajanuru and Mandagadde to Thirthahalli) a 44km stretch is aiming for cutting of 1365 trees(this number is on papers, actual number is more than that) along the road side and private lands. These trees are good old trees, and roosting sites for Malabar Pied Hornbills and many other arboreal species. If phase-1 of this project gets implemented, this will create bottle neck situation at both ends of SWS. And a huge pressure will mount on Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary. For future phases road passing through Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary might become easy target. In that case we will lose our valuable wildlife.
NH-13 has very less traffic compared to any other NH, accidents and casualty are low in number. Widening of this road is not in demand by locals. Still authorities and leaders are pushing this project with great "INTEREST". Currently the project is waiting for approval from Forest Department, to clear all the trees along the road side and in private land. Forest Department has asked people opinion on the same. Last date is over to file the petition through letters and Forest Department has received 1400 objections from locals.
We want this number to go more, hence please do sign this petition and give a strong message to the authorities and leaders that people are against NH-13 widening project(all phases).
