The Issue

Appalachian people have been exploited for generations beginning with timber and coal companies manipulating the land away and creating stereotypes about our lack of education, to the pharmaceutical companies through systematic eradication from addiction caused by overwhelming our region with prescription drugs, the demonization of the culture of poverty and now by National Geographic through their program "Southern Justice." We Appalachians are proud people with our culture and history tied to this land and these mountains. We are the children of Daniel Boone and Davey Crockett. We were the first frontiersmen and women, the first leaders of the State of Franklin, we are the Overmountain Men who changed the tide of the Revolutionary war at Kings Mountain. We are the folks that helped start the movement to abolish slavery, right here in Jonesborough with Elihu Embree and his newspaper. We are the birthplace of country music and we have many more feats to be proud of and share with America. "Bath Salts and Battery" is not one of them. Allowing our citizens to be paraded in front of the world before due process happens is unacceptable and exploitative. Drug abuse and crime are an unfortunate part of ALL regions but it's only entertainment when it's the "inbred hillbilly" offenders? That is unacceptable and we should stand up, as a community and reject this debacle that is "Southern Justice." National Geographic could focus on our rich and wonderful history of great men and women. Our Sheriff's Office could offer rehabilitation for drug addiction instead of criminalizing it. Our representatives could create legislation to improve our poverty stricken, mentally ill and drug addicted citizens instead of allowing them to be exploited. We have some fine police officers in this region who are well trained and professional in their duties but since National Geographic came on the scene, our officers are willing to create false charges and blow situations out of proportion just for ratings. This is NOT the job they are hired to do. They are here to protect and serve the citizens of Sullivan County and that can't continue to happen if they are more concerned about how they look on TV. This entire debacle is irresponsible, unwarranted and exploitative. Please stop this while you can. We deserve better. We are better.
