Make Jimmy Haslam sell the Browns

The Issue

Jimmy Haslam is a unscrupulous business man who was foisted upon the Cleveland Browns fans in 2012. He bought the team from Randy Lerner, who was only the team owner due to the death of his father, Al Lerner, in 2002. It is rumored that in 2002, Randy Promised his mother, Norma Lerner, that he would maintain ownership of the team for 10 years out of loyalty to his father, Al.

Let us not forget, it was Al Lerners plane that Art Modell used in 1995 to broker the move of his NFL franchise from Cleveland to Baltimore, with the blessing of the NFL. This was after the expansion of 1994, where Al Lerner's perspective Baltimore ownership group was denied one of the 2 new expansion franchises. It is purported Modell lobbied for Baltimore not to be awarded an expansion team, because he wanted to leave Baltimore as a possible destination for his Cleveland franchise. It is also alleged that Modell and Lerner had a backdoor agreement where if Lerner helped get Modell to Baltimore, Modell would help Lerner buy the "new" Browns (est. 1999).

All of these events happened under the purview of the NFL.

Since 2012, Jimmy Haslam has proved to be one of the most impetuous and impatient owners in all sports. His stewardship of the Cleveland Browns has, without a doubt, been one of the most disorganized, slapdash and bungled endeavors in the history of capitalism. However, he has successfully made a profit every year, upgraded the stadium in which his team plays (which allows him to charge premium rates for luxury suites, the number of which has increased under his ownership), due to the loyalty of the Cleveland sports fandom.

The only power Cleveland Browns fans have against team owners is the power of the boycott. Unfortunately, the NFL has proved time and again that if fans do not support their local franchise, then the League does not have any compunction with allowing the owner of that Local Trust to move his franchise to any other location where He feels he might be able to make a few dollars more.

We, the fans of the Cleveland Browns, beseech you — Rodger Goodell and the owners of the other 31 NFL teams — to finally make this right. Please do something good for the fans of the Browns who have indirectly given you MILLIONS of dollars over the last 75 years...

Jimmy Haslam was "Selected" the NFL to be the purchaser of the Browns when Randy Lerner said he didn't want to own the team anymore. People in Cleveland had never heard of him. We certainly never asked for him. We definitely would not have approved him if we knew how he ran his family business (which is still dealing with Federal indictments and convictions). He is a pock mark on the shield. A complete joke and an insult to the hard-working fans of the Cleveland Browns, many of whom spend a substantial amount of their income each year just to support their team and your league.

Please force Mr. Haslam to sell. He is not fit to be an NFL owner. His embarrassment of the NFL through the Flying J scandal should have been enough to warrant his ouster, but alas, it was not. Now is the time to set things right and make up for all the slaps in the face Browns fans have endured, without wavering their monetary support, over these last 25 years.

Thank you for your time,
