Empower our Indigent people: Strengthen RA 8731
The Issue
The Philippines is a shelter of more than five hundred Indigenous People communities. Indigenous people or “mga katutubo” are known to have a rich culture, beliefs, unique languages, and they are considered as non-dominant groups of the society. Sadly, these indegenous people are not being given proper and equal treatment in today's generation. Indegenous people are very important in our society because they are the one who define the true culture of our country, Philippines. We were only influenced by the other countries that is why we had different types of culture. But, these indigenous people signifies the personality and image of a true Filipino. Due to the lack of exposure of Indigenous people to the society, they are prone to discrimination, their rights as humans are abused, and they are recognized as poor. In October 29, 1997, two decades ago, the Republic Act 8371 or the Indigenous People’s Right Act was implemented. As the law states, “An act to recognize, protect and promote the rights of indigenous cultural communities/indigenous people, creating a national commission of indigenous people, establishing implementing mechanisms, appropriating funds therefor, and for other purposes.” In short, the government pursued this act to remove the flaws of indigenous people and for them to be part of this society with no judgments. Even though this act was implemented throughout the nation, still issues on the rights of Indigenous people are existing. Discrimination are all over the place, especially in schools and jobs, health access is poor within the community, lack of control of their ancestral domains, and in addition, they are being taken advantage in politics. Thus, these are the reasons why a petition is being constructed. If this dilemma will not be solved, the rights of Indigenous people will continuously be abused and not to be care about. The main purpose of this petition is to widely spread the implementation of the Republic Act 8371 or the Indigenous People’s Right Act and end the sensitive issues being grasped by them. Remember, if our indegenous people will be gone, our country will not be the same anymore. Our country is not complete without them. The empowerment of the indigenous people’s rights towards their ancestral property and right to healthcare and education will definitely stop the agony grasped by them. The proposal is a realization that we all have the rights to live equally, and not be discriminated. As a result peace and prosperity will arise throughout the nation.
