We Regine Javier and Ysabel Trinos, are students from St. Scholastica’s Academy Marikina, and we would like to ask for your help to spread awareness regarding issues indigenous groups or tribes are experiencing in our society today. Spreading awareness regarding their current situation will lead to more people helping them.
The indigenous people in the Philippines comprise about 14% of the people in our country (De Vera, 2007). They are considered to be part of the lowliest and most disadvantaged social groups in the country. They are located in remote areas where they could not access some of their basic needs.
Due to the poverty they experience, a number of indigenous people are moving to the city to pursue better opportunities for them. However, some end up living along the streets or will either become homeless beggars. As these indigenous people stay and socialize with people from the city, they receive negative judgements and criticisms from people in the city regarding their way of dressing, speaking, and their level of education. Therefore, we want to raise this issue, spread awareness and have petition to stop this kind of actions to our fellow Filipinos.
We must try to help them attain all their basic needs, and rather than belittle them for being illiterate or poor we must educate them instead.
