"Wole Soyinka said, “Nationality, like religion, is only another construct into which one is either born, or acquires by accident or indoctrination.”

We are a creation of the West: our official language, our conceived mannerisms and constitution. We want to be more British than the British people themselves.

Today, we talk about restructuring but I find it palpably exonerating that we do not comprehend the entire concept of restructuring.

While we are grateful for the National anthem we have had and all sang to, we regretfully think that it has this dispassionate or unemotional twist to it that fails to inspire connection to the cause of collectively building a great nation.

You can’t squeeze out any sort of emotions from Nigerians when they read their pledge or sing the anthem. This is why I am making an open suggestion that we change the current National Anthem to Timi Dakolo’s Great Nation especially now when Nigeria feels like hell to most and when the bulk Nigerians feel short-changed. If rightly indoctrinated, it is a simple song that can make us begin to rethink about the possibilities that abound in this glorious nation.

I have not been paid by Timi Dakolo and Cobhams Asuquo who produced this beautiful piece of art, to propagate this as an agenda. I was only enamoured by the beauty of the work: I drove in a car with my cousin and a friend and we all agreed that this would and should and could be Nigeria’s newest Anthem. It may take time to digest, but since we could change currencies and holiday dates (Recently, Democracy Day was changed from May 29th to June 12th) and everything pertained to the obviousness of restructuring, we might as well, try to reconfigure our emotions.

One of the greatest things that could happen to Nigeria, is having our people embrace the nature of nationalism and patriotism. It is what we lack at the moment. It remains our utmost dreams that we want to have our children born outside Nigeria, so they could become passport holders of different other countries that we believe are better than Nigeria.

Few weeks ago, I was in the country of Haiti, where I had volunteered to teach and also, help rebuild some of the institutions, ravaged by the earthquake that crept into the country and brought it to its knees. Most homes in Port-au-Prince, where I was domiciled, have the Haitian flags hanging here and there. The same wave of nationalism spreading all over the US and in places like Cuba.

I used to disbelieve in the concept of the Nigerian entity, but I have come to realize that I have no other country. No matter how far I run, I come nearly back to the country I have once described as a dungeon, a jungle. It is where people hustle themselves. Dogs eating dogs. Because we lack empathy and compassion and then, nationalism. We do the things we do in Nigeria for personal reasons.

This may just change soon, from indoctrination of patriotism. I strongly believe that as long as one lives in Nigeria, he is bound to allegiance to the nation. We have no other choice. It is either we stay or leave.

The lyrics of Timi Dakolo’s Great Nation are spell-binding. They are simple and tell exactly how we feel and live. For this song to be accepted by the entire nation, it will show how much we want to progress. Other nations sing their anthems with emotions wrapped around their hearts, we do not even take into consideration, the sentiments that come with what we say when we pledge to our nation. Could this be the moment to inject nationalism in Nigerians?

I will leave you with the video and the lyrics. Perhaps, you could help me in making sure this gets accepted by the entire nation through the Senate. They have every right to make this work.

Our patriotism could be refined like wine and why not, every Nigerian household can hang a Nigerian flag outside their home too? It might sound a bit awkward, but I actually travel with the Nigerian flag.

Patriotism may be our way out of this pot of penury and perjury.

Great Nation by Timi Dakolo

Here we stand as a people
With one song, with one voice
We're a nation, undivided and poised
We will take our stand, and build our land
With faith to defend what is ours

Here we are as a people
With one heart, for one cause
We're determined to rebuild and restore
Where freedom reigns, and truth prevails
A land where there's hope for us all
A land where there's hope for us all

We're all we have, we'll defend our land
We believe in this nation, and we know we'll get there
We're all we have, we'll defend our land
We believe in Nigeria and the promise she holds
And that one day we'll shine like the sun
We're a great nation

Though we are many people
Different tribes, different tongues
We're united in our strength and resolve
To uphold the honour of our land
And for generations to come
And for generations to come

We're all we have, we'll defend our land
We believe in this nation, and we know we'll get there
We're all we have, we'll defend our land
We believe in Nigeria and the promise she holds
And that one day we'll shine like the sun
We're a great nation

Nigeria Nigeria
Nigeria Nigeria
Nigeria Nigeria
Nigeria Nigeria
Nigeria Nigeria
Nigeria Nigeria
Nigeria Nigeria

We're all we have, we'll defend our land
We believe in this nation, and we know we'll get there
We're all we have, we'll defend our land
We believe in Nigeria and the promise she holds
And that one day we'll shine like the sun

We're all we have, we'll defend our land
We believe...
We're all we have, we'll defend our land
We believe...

We're a great nation.
