In 2016, as Editor in Chief of the Science Journals, Marcia McNutt, wrote an editorial extolling the virtue of scientific societies that revised their bylaws to push out sexual harassers. Shortly after her post, Marcia took over as President of the National Academy of Sciences where she hit the campus and meeting circuit preaching about sexual harassment reform. At the February 2017 meeting of ASLO, Marcia asked the audience ""Are we selecting for the best and the brightest or the toughest and most determined?" and demanding that we, "Protect the sexual harassment whisleblowers, give real sanctions and empower women in science." The problem is, Marcia forgot to kick harassers out of the society she runs. Later that year, Marcia was interviewed in in Scientific American saying, "I find it totally appalling that it has taken this long for all of these women to feel comfortable coming forward". Marcia, women aren't coming forward because people like you, people in power, aren't doing anything to help them. Protection for women, sanctions for harassers and empowerment are all just words until you do something. The National Academy is our most valued scientific community in the US. And Marcia, you were right back in 2016. Societies, like the NAS, should kick out members who have been sanctioned for sexual misconduct. Period. Stating the facts over and over and commissioning studies is absurd, hurtful and useless. We have a lot of work to do to make science safe for everyone, Marcia.
