Maybe you've only recently found the #MeTooSTEM community, or perhaps you have seen the stories of harassment, assault and retaliation for years? Regardless of how long you've known about the impact of sexual harassment on our community, we really need your help now. This week. In less than a week, national media will be focused on The National Academy of Sciences report on the impact of sexual harassment on the STEM. There will be huge numbers of lost careers and women who have 'fallen out of the pipeline'. We can not miss this opportunity to personalize and push our scientific societies to do better in protecting women. No one should have to face someone found guilty of harassment, assault and retaliation at a scientific conference, much less know they maintain a grasp on power by remaining members of The National Academy of Sciences. This has to end now. What can you do? We need THREE THINGS: 1) SPREAD THE WORD. We now have a website on wordpress.metoo.com I need you to share with your colleagues and friends. We need women's stories of how harassment has impacted them. We want to make it impossible to forget these stories. To forget these women who loved science and found themselves cornered, retaliated against and without the support of their universities. This will make the NAS' report mean something other than just having numbers. There are seven short questions and we can help people post anonymously. 2) JOIN US! Get some friends together and join us for a viewing party and live tweet up when The National Academy of Sciences report is released at 11 am EST June 12th. Register for the live webcast here http://sites.nationalacademies.org/SHStudy/SHSTUDY_186857 3) SPEAK UP: Spread the petition to oust harassers from the NAS and Comment under the petition. The fact that the very institution releasing the study on harassment harbors harassers is stupefying. We need to end the hypocrisy at NAS and other prestigious societies now. Reporters from Science, The Washington Post, STAT and Mother Jones are looking for women and men in science to talk about why women's safety needs to be addressed now. They are looking for your Comments on Twitter and on the Change.org site under the petition. If a reporter contacts you, follow up and be heard! You should know, there is no organization behind this. It's just you and me and 3,000 very cool science friends we have made in the last month. It is up to us to keep the pressure on NAS up. I need you to help do that. Let's not pass this problem onto a new generation of trainees. Thank you, BethAnn McLaughlin #MeTooSTEM PS If you have social media platforms you use like Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, we really could use more visibility there across communities. Please consider posting for #MeTooSTEM asking for stories and signatures to the petition.
