Buzzfeed's Peter Aldhaus published an article on our petition today asking the NAS to oust members with a history of sexual harassment, assault and retaliation. Aldhaus' article dug deep, finding academy members went so far as to posthumously celebrate member and convicted child sexual offender Carleton Gajdusek. On their site The National Academy of Sciences quote a colleague who says, "Carleton emphatically and repeatedly rejected our norms as prudish and vociferously defended his behavior as natural, both historically and by the more liberal standards of many other countries today" That's one hell of a description for a child rapist. And let's not forget Geoff Marcy, Joseph Schlessinger, Sergio Verdu and Thomas Jessell who remain active members despite dozens verified accounts of abusing colleagues and trainees. We are better than this. Keep the pressure up, friends and push the National Academy to clean house.
