Thank you to everyone who signed and shared this petition. It sends a strong message to the Georgia General Assembly as well as the University System of Georgia. HB 859 has been scheduled for the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing this Wednesday, March 2nd, at 3pm. This is the last stop in the committee process before the bill either does or does not go to the Senate floor for a vote. I will be delivering this petition to UGA President Jere Morehead this upcoming week. Although much of the University System of Georgia is against this bill, leaders such as President Morehead, Bud Peterson (President of Georgia Tech), and the Georgia Board of Regents have not shown outright opposition for the bill. We need a stronger response from the University System of Georgia that shows their clear opposition to a campus carry bill. I also plan on hand-delivering this petition to the Georgia State Senate this upcoming week during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. There are a couple things that we can do to further fight this bill. 1. The Senate Judicial Committee hearing can be attended by anyone. It’s important to attend the hearing with as many people who oppose the bill as possible and offer testimony about why it’s such a bad idea. If you would like to attend the hearing, it is March 2 at 3pm and is in Room 307 - CLOB (Coverdell Legislative Office Building, which is directly across from the Capitol). 2. Please share this petition with anyone you know. I want to get to 1,500 signatures before tonight! 3. Call the Georgia State Senate Judiciary Committee members. I know it’s asking a lot but they need to hear from us! When you call, let them know who you are, that you oppose HB 859, and ask them to vote NO in the upcoming hearing. If it goes to voice mail, please leave a message. Goes without saying to be polite (although hard to do, sometimes), as I know you will. 4. Contact your local Senator and express your opposition to HB 859. 5. Contact any member of the Georgia Board of Regents and make clear their need to take a strong stance against HB 859. Thank you again for all the support.
