Please sign this petition for “(Bicyclists) May Use Full Lane” signs on major roads in the Town of North Hempstead.
The existing roads and drivers do not allow for safe bike riding in the community. There are little to no bike lanes. There are also few wide paved shoulders on busy roads that have adequate biking conditions. The roads are not the only problem. Some drivers are unaware that they have to share the road with and be aware of bikers. Some are also unaware that bikers have to bike on the road rather than on sidewalks.
Creating bike lanes is a goal for our community. But, for now, the addition of “(Bicyclists) May Use Full Lane” signs is a simple, low-cost and low-effort method of educating our drivers to keep an eye out for bikers. This sign will prevent accidents and make biking safer. Signs would be most effective at major intersections such as:
- Hillside Avenue and Herricks Road
- Herricks Road and Shelter Rock Road
- Searingtown Road and I.U. Willets
- Hillside Avenue and Marcus Avenue
- Hillside Avenue and Willis Avenue
- Meadowfarm Road and Marcus Avenue
Making biking a safer idea in our community will encourage biking. Biking is a healthier way people can get around that will also save the environment.
As a part of my Girl Scout Gold Project, my goal is to change the biking environment in our community. Please join me in signing this petition for safer biking in the Town of North Hempstead.
