Napa High: Change Your Mascot

Napa High: Change Your Mascot
The Issue
Napa High has been around since 1897. It is a school with a rich tradition in Napa Valley, but the continued use of a racist mascot taints that tradition. Napa High's mascot, the Indians, is racist and disrespectful to a people whose land was stolen through colonial genocide.
California state legislature just passed a law ending mascots like "Redskins," yet the Napa Indians live on.
No more Napa Indians. No more running around at football games with headdresses on, no more mocking gestures, no more "tribal pride," no more "Indian of the Year."
Napa High prides itself as a progressive campus with a curriculum preparing students for life in the 21st century workforce. There should be no room for antiquated stereotypes and racism in that mission, and, as an alumnus, it is embarrassing that it still stands.
