On behalf of the international students in Nanyang Technological University (NTU), we express our disappointment and discontent with the university’s mistreatment of international students.

At 1 a.m. 1st July 2021, many international students in NTU have received an email from NTU Housing and Auxiliary Service regarding the rejection of our hall’s application. The office explained that due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there is a cap on the number of students staying in the halls imposed by the authorities. Fewer rooms are available because of the need to reserve for COVID-19 isolation and other related purposes. Many international students are currently staying on-campus due to the COVID-19 situation. Most of the international students couldn’t go back to their home country. However, the Housing and Auxiliary Service has the audacity to inform us that we have to vacate our current room no later than 15 July 2021, which is within two weeks.

This is an outrageous mishandling of the situation for the following reasons:

1) Firstly, the university only gave vague explanations about the situation. What is the cap on the number of students staying in the halls? Which authorities? Where is the official statement issued by the authorities? How many rooms in total are available? How many of them are needed to be reserved for COVID-19 isolation? The university has no transparency in its decision-making process, and it does not even bother to provide us with a proper explanation of the situation. When we were applying for hall, no cap on hall rooms or any such information was disclosed to us. The university is clearly disregarding our right to know, and we demand a responsible response from the university.

2) Secondly, the university released the hall application result only one month before the semester starts and requires international students to move out within two weeks. This is clearly outrageous, as it is almost impossible to find an off-campus accommodation within such a short amount of time. Not to mention that many off-campus accommodations are significantly more expensive, and many international students are already struggling with their finance. Those international students that come from low-income families might not even be able to afford off-campus accommodation. The university can easily avoid such a situation by releasing the results earlier, yet they didn’t. Has the university not considered this? This is irresponsible and disrespectful.

As a university that prides itself on its achievement and reputation, such irresponsible action is intolerable. The mistreatment of international students will only tarnish the university’s reputation, and this is undoubtedly bad for both NTU and Singapore. On behalf of the international students in NTU, we demand an immediate response from the university, and we demand our applications to the hall be granted. We wish that the public can hold the university accountable for its actions. NTU is a public institution, therefore this crisis concerns not only international students in NTU but the general public in Singapore.
