Federal Salaries are not negotiating chips

Federal Salaries are not negotiating chips

Regardless of party affiliation, using other people’s salaries as a bargaining chip on a negotiating table and then forcing them to work without pay is one of the most blatant abuses of power happening right under our noses. In addition, it is incredibly dangerous because it affects the people in charge of our safety and national security, making them easy targets for manipulation by third parties.
Any corporation who would suspend their employees’ paychecks for this long plus threaten to fire them if they don’t show up to work would have been sued ages ago. Therefore, my idea is simple: the gov’t should use basic accounting principles and fund ALL salaries automatically. Then, changes to budgets would be handled the way every business does: reduced or increased labor and expenses depending on changes to budget.
There’s a great petition here by a dad who suggested that Congress go without pay as well during a shutdown, and though that’s an amazing idea which can also be included as an additional safety net, people’s salaries shouldn’t be on anyone else’s negotiating table. Period.
If it’s not your pay, you have no say.
