The human right to safe drinking water was first recognized by the UN General Assembly and the Human Rights Council as part of binding international law in 2010.  Island Health has issued a Hazard Abatement and Prevention Order to the City of Nanaimo which includes the provision of a free flow of potable water to the growing tent city of homeless people occupying 1 Port Drive.  Dr. Paul Hasselback, Island Health medical health officer has warned that there are  “reasonable and probable grounds to believe that conditions exist that present a significant risk of causing a health hazard.”  Please support access to water for everyone as a human right and include those in Nanaimo Discon Tent City.  Ask The CIty of Nanaimo Mayor and Council to comply with the order by Island Health medical health officer Dr Paul Hasselback to ensure free-flowing potable water and adequate sanitation.
