Tell Georgia State Representatives: Give the Power to the People and Not Georgia Power

The Issue

I am joining the City of East Point advocates from the residential and business community in calling on the East Point, Georgia State Representatives to stop the development of a Georgia Power Substation in the City of East Point, at the corner of Eubanks Avenue and Bachelor Street, nestled within a beautiful residential community.

Substations are used to condition electricity as it moves through the grid. Substations can include switching, protection, and control equipment; capacitors; voltage regulators; and transformers. Substations can either “step down” or “step up” high- or low-voltage electricity to prepare it for further transmission or distribution.

The World Health Organization (WHO) continues to conduct extensive research on the correlation between the health effects of long-term exposure to electromagnetic fields and cancer.

WHO further states, there is no doubt that short-term exposure to very high levels of electromagnetic fields can be harmful to health.  Current public concern focuses on possible long-term health effects caused by exposure to electromagnetic fields at levels below those required to trigger acute biological responses.

The City of East Point advocates ask that the Georgia Power site selection committee choose an alternative site, and stop the impending eminent domain proceedings to mitigate the negative community, health, safety, environmental, social, and aesthetic impact of a substation on the 7 acres of commercially developed land, encroaching on the lives of people, homes and community, where children play.

At the same time, the owners of the commercial property do not want to sell their property to Georgia Power, which in addition, maximizes the negative impact to the property owners with the new infrastructure in the existing vibrant community.

The beautiful City of East Point is home to 34,879, spanning over 15 miles, and has a population density of 2,375 people per square mile.

I am asking my State Representatives to work together with the City of East Point community to ensure the highest and best use of the space, and give the Power to the People to create welcoming, safe, spaces with a sense of belonging for all.  Not to a big corporation like Georgia Power! Thank you for your leadership at this critical time.   #powertothepeople #stopgapower
