Lon Gerrish is a name that has become synonymous with wrestling in our community, but his legacy goes well beyond. He knows and believes in the true value of a positive athletic culture and has been a proponent for recognizing the accomplishments of all Sandwich High School (SHS) athletes.

After an illustrious wrestling career at Glenbrook North High School and Northern Illinois University, he accepted the position of head wrestling coach at Sandwich High School and initiated the first ever lifting program and advocated for and created the Wall of Fame, recognizing SHS athletes who excel. Through his hard work and dedication, he transformed our wrestling program into one of Illinois' elite wrestling programs. He ended his coaching career with 17 conference titles; 14 regional tournament wins; qualified for the dual team state tournament 7 times with 4 state titles; 93 individual state qualifiers; 47 state place winners; 15 state champions; 5 high school All-Americans.  

His dedication to the sport, to our students and as a mentor has not gone unnoticed - he was named IWCOA Coach of the Year twice, Man of the Year, Administrator of the Year, received a Lifetime Achievement Award, and is a member of the IWCOA Hall of Fame.

Despite these numerous accolades, there's no physical testament in our school to honor Lon's significant contributions. It's time we rectify this oversight by naming our small gym after him - The "Lon Gerrish Gymnasium". This gesture will not only recognize his unparalleled commitment, but also inspire future generations who walk through its doors.

What exactly are we asking the Sandwich School District Board of Education for? We are requesting lettering above the gym doors and a plaque with Lon's image, name, significant stats and several quotes from his former wrestlers and those he has impacted.

We urge you to join us in honoring this local legend for his tireless service to Sandwich High School, its students, and the sport of wrestling.
