This year has given the NAIA many difficult decisions to make in the wake of a global pandemic, and so far they have handled these difficult times with empathy, professionalism, and class. 

The NAIA made the right, albeit difficult, decision to cancel all winter and spring national championships in the best interest of fans and teams across the nation. The NAIA has graciously provided eligibility relief to spring athletes. 

Now the NAIA is faced with an even bigger decision to make: How can we appropriately handle the aftermath of canceling a season before it has properly ended? 

The NAIA should give all seniors on teams who did not FULLY complete their seasons in various national championships an extra year of eligibility. (Basketball, Wrestling, Men’s Vball, Competitive Cheerleading, Competitive Dance, etc.)

Teams work all year for a shot at a national title. Even if 90% of a teams season has been competed, it’s not COMPLETE until they are able to play in the national championship that they worked so hard all year to attend. 

NAIA athletes who have given so much to these programs should be given the chance to end their seasons on their own terms. In unprecedented times such as these, leniency and grace should be extended and not withheld.
