Ollie Saunders started this petition to Mr Andy Perry (Myton School) and

2020 has been a totally disruptive year, with the COVID-19 pandemic causing major closure and changes to society. However, whilst lockdown saw a total stoppage to normal human activity, the climate crisis has continued to get worse, with no recovery made as a result of lockdown.

So far, 2020 has been a horrible year for climate change, Earth experienced the hottest January since records began; February saw the wettest month on record since 1862; March introduced lockdown which would continue until July, the new hottest month on record; July also saw wildfires ravaging in Serbia and the Arctic Circle experienced a heatwave. In late July, an oil tanker beached off the coast of Mauritius, spilling thousands of tonnes of oil into the surrounding environment, causing major damage to wildlife, threatening marine biodiversity in the area; and with the latest, fires in the Amazon rainforest are still raging, a rate 50% higher than the average over the last 10 years.

As much as these events are taking place in locations thousands of miles away, our lifestyle and actions here, in the UK, have a huge part to play in the climate crisis. Many say China’s reluctance is the biggest problem in tackling the climate crisis, however, we cannot forget the historical impact Britain and other European countries have had during the industrial revolution. Since the industrial revolution, humans have released abut 1.5 trillion tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, and despite China making up 27% of annual emissions today, the EU has emitted 22% of all historical emissions. Bearing in mind that China only started industrialising in the middle of the last century, a significantly shorter period than Britain or America.

From these statistics, it becomes apparent that the EU and America, in fact, carry more responsibility than China for their historical total emissions over the history of combustion. If we decided to seriously tackle climate change, we would see rapid action to reduce emissions, unfortunately, no government has been willing to seriously commit to securing the future of the Earth and so the burden of reducing our impact falls on us. Each of us.

Myton School is a large school with a huge impact, and unfortunately, the more you look into it, the more this becomes apparent.

For example, staff have been let down, with no electric vehicle infrastructure, meaning staff are sticking with polluting conventional vehicles, threatening our health and the environment. Providing electric vehicle charging onsite for staff would mean more staff would feel comfortable making the change to electric vehicles.

There are so many more ways Myton could lower it's impact, and it would not take much effort to discover this. The part you play in the future is totally up to you.

Mr Perry, Head Teacher and Mrs Burley, Chair of the Governors, after the climate protests last year you said that the school would ‘discuss ways that we can reduce our impact on the climate and the School Council will be meeting to plan activities, messages and changes we can implement quickly‘. A year later, nothing has changed. We urge you to take decisive action now to declare a state of emergency and reduce the school’s environmental impact, and put an end to it’s contribution to the urgent climate crisis.

It is not too late to implement positive changes to improve the school’s impact, not only helping the environment, but the health of staff, students, and the planet. These changes would not be hindered by the coronavirus pandemic and so the sooner, the better.

Remember, the next few years ultimately decide the next thousand years, the responsibility is in our hands.
