Save The Pandas

The Issue

The panda population has been increasing over the last few years, with about 1,600 living in the wild. Thanks to China's help the panda population has increased 16.8% since 2003, but we could still help the panda even more by doing one simple thing, we could stop using as much paper and recycle. A paper was released in June of 2011 that stated, "Since the result of third national survey report for giant panda in China resulted in about 270 individuals estimated in the region, the Habitat Carrying Capacity is already exceeded" (Fan, 2011).

Some background information about the pandas are that they live in mountain ranges along central China, in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. They are primary consumers that survive only on bamboo, they are in trophic level 2 and the paper some people use comes from bamboo.

So if we didn't waste as much paper we would have a bigger environment for the pandas so expand in. Even though pandas were removed from the endangered species list in 2016 they are still considered vulnerable and that is one of the reasons why we should help their environment and species.

To further help the growth of the panda population, I propose that we ban the use of bamboo paper in the state of New York.

Paper: Impact of road construction on giant panda’s habitat and its carrying capacity in Qinling Mountains. 2011
