Everyone deserves mental well-being at work. That includes stretched mental health nurses trying to fill the gaps of an underfunded health system. On Monday, Nelson community mental health nurses refused to work a new roster with poor work-life balance and which breached their contract. Nelson hospital responded by threatening "personal consequences" including disciplinary action and loss of pay. Management agreed to mediation next Monday and staff can temporarily work their old roster. But management won’t commit to nurses getting at least one in six weekends with their families. (They also asked us to stop our petition.) One family from Nelson summed the situation up succinctly: "This amazing team saved my husband's life. Their own mental health is paramount for them to do their job properly. A full weekend off every six weeks is the very least they deserve." Nurses will deliver the petition to managers next Monday and they'll read out some of the messages. Managers are already paying attention to the petition, help give it a boost.
