Help The Brit Bar become a recognised Grassroots Music Venue

The Issue

The Brit Bar in Weston-super-Mare has been a pub for around 200 years. Over the last decade has developed the reputation as being a superb, little live music venue which hosts 150-185 events per year, 3-6 times per week.

‘The Brit’ has recently been attempting to become acknowledged as a recognised Grassroots Music Venue. Despite meeting all of the criteria required to be a GMV, it has (so far) been unable to achieve such classification and recognition from the higher powers.

The result of failing to be acknowledged as a GMV means that it is unable to get the funding support it needs, the recognition as a notable place to perform, and is unable host viable performances at accessible times to the public as a result of the 10pm curfew and social distancing measures.

As a venue which hosts events from all styles of music (Bhangra, Blues, Punk, Metal, Ska & Reggae, Indie, Acoustic, EDM, Folk and so on) from acts of all ages, genders, ethnic backgrounds and at various stages in their career; in the last year, ‘The Brit’ has seen performances from college bands, local bands, touring bands, up and coming artists and more established bands such as 3 Daft Monkeys and XSLF (Stiff Little Fingers).

Please sign this petition to help The Brit Bar get the support it needs, and the recognition it deserves.

Responded
Hi all and especially team Brit Bar, thanks for drawing this petition to my attention. I am not sure there is anything North Somerset Council can do to assist as we Grassroots Music Venue isn't a designation, as such, under the licensing laws. But I'll certainly look into this and see what we can do with our licensing team to help. If I can help in any way to support your application to the Music Venues Trust, please let me know and I'd be pleased to assist. Thanks - and good luck. Councillor Mike Bell, Deputy Leader of North Somerset Council and Executive Member with responsibility for licensing
