Musgrave Group: It's time to ditch cruel cages!
The Issue
Hi, I'm Pauline McLynn and I'm joining The Humane League and calling on Musgrave Group to stop selling eggs from cruel cage farms.
Musgrave - who own Centra, SuperValu, Daybreak and Musgrave Marketplace - claim to be Ireland's 'leading' grocer. But they are certainly not leading the way when it comes to animal welfare.
Musgrave sells eggs from hens kept in cruel ‘colony’ cages. Many people think it’s now illegal to keep hens in cages, but these so-called ‘colony’ cages are still legal and Musgrave continues to use them despite the suffering they cause.
Hens forced to live in these cages live a life that simply isn’t worth living. They will suffer their entire lives standing on a wire-mesh floor crammed in cages with as many as 90 other hens. They will never get to experience the sun on their back or grass between their toes, let alone carry out natural hen behaviours.
Other leading retailers in Ireland including Tesco, Lidl, Aldi, and Iceland have made commitments to phase out and stop selling eggs from caged hens because of the suffering it causes - but Musgrave are refusing.
Please, sign my petition and let Musgrave know that you will not support this kind of extreme animal cruelty by shopping at Centra, SuperValue, Daybreak or Musgrave Marketplace. It's time for Musgrave to join its competitors, and the 21st century, by producing a timeline to stop sourcing eggs from farms that cage hens.
So, Musgrave, in the words of Mrs Doyle.... "Ah, go on. Go on, go on, go on," stop using cruel cages!
