The Canvas app is a great tool that allows students to get an in-depth look into their grades, but only if professors enter their grades in a timely manner. Many professors wait until the end of the semester—after students’ deadline to drop or audit classes they’re not performing well in—to enter grades into the Canvas app. Some teachers don’t even grade their assignments at all until finals week. 

The right of students to know their grades in a timely manner is important for many different reasons, namely for classes where the majority of a students grade is papers. Knowing the grade of the previous paper before turning in the next should be a common sense goal. Different professors have different writing preferences and grading styles, so getting a grade on early-in-the-semester papers can give students an idea of how to adjust their writing style to match the professor’s preferences. 

Please sign this petition to urge the Murray State University Board of Regents to set a new policy enforcing a deadline on notifying students of their grades. Whether it be two weeks after the date the assignment was turned in, or simply making sure that the student knows their situation by the drop/audit deadlines, professors should be held accountable.
