Let me give you a little information about myself. My name is Melody and about a little over a year ago I was struggling with my own mental health issues. I had trouble focusing, completing task, etc. For a long time, I suffer alone not knowing what was going on me. Although, I was receiving services like therapy and taking medication I found myself still struggling. It wasn't until I walked into the Peer Drop-in Center located in the heart of the Anacostia area in SE DC, (The Big Chair area) that it literally connected the dots for me. Now I am more equipped to manage my mental health symptoms and guide others with similar and not so similar experiences. I eventually enrolled into a WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) Seminar in which I learned a lot about myself. I created my WRAP plan, met a wonderful group of people and went on to become a WRAP Facilitator, Recovery Coach and Certified Peer Specialist. (And I do not plan of stopping there)

Our Door Community Wellness Center is the first of its kind to be own and operated by peers. They offer peer support services in which you talk to a Certified Peer Specialist, a trained individual with shared experience that knows how to guide you through the recovery-oriented system of care to help you get the resources you need. These resources include assistance applying for housing, SNAP benefits, applying for employment, referrals to training, etc. They offer various classes such as WRAP, Basic Math & Reading, Advocacy, Self Care, Therapeutic Arts, Nutrition, and Recovery.

Personally speaking without this organization I would not have a clear plan of what I want to do next. I would not have a system in place to manage my depression symptoms and my recovery. I am sure I am not the only person that feels this way. I've grown to love the place, the staff, the peers and their mission. Our Door Community Wellness Center have motivated me to share what I have learned, there is hope, recovery of any kind is work, not be ashamed to ask for help and advocate for yourself. If you received any services from the community center or you know someone that can benefit from these services, help us to continue serving the community. Please sign the petition and contact the following organizations above. Share in Support of  Our Door Community Wellness Center!!

Thank you,

Melody Cooper
