This is to bring your kind attention regarding an incident on 15th Aug 24 near Raj College, Jhargram, wherein a schedule 1 animal an elephant was murdered in the name of driving the elephants violating sec 9,of Wildlife protection amendment act 2022

It is known that on instruction from Divisional Forest Officer & Range Forest Officer, Jhargram 3 no of Hula Teams from Jamboni, Bhulavedai & Manikpara villages were called in to drive the elephants from the area. From these 3 teams one member (video indicating the person is being circulated in social media) seem to have stabbed an female elephant with flammable hulla (mashaal) on its back and immediately the female’s couldn’t stand on its hind leg, as seen in video’s circulated in whatsapp and social media  and resulting to death next day ie 16th Aug 24.

There is also violation of SC order WP No 489/2018, wherein it was clearly mentioned that inhuman practices like throwing of fire balls on elephants is illegal, Divisional Forest Officer & Range Forest Officer has violated the SC order in this case.

We want investigation to be carried out on this matter on urgent basis and identify the person who stabbed the elephant and arrest and prosecute for violation of Sec 9 (Section 9: Prohibition of hunting - This section prohibits the hunting of wild animals, except in certain circumstances) of of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.

Also, to Initiate investigation and enquiry against DFO & RFO Jhargram for violating Sec 9, 52 (Section 52 states that anyone who tries to go against or helps others go against any of the Act's provisions, rules, or orders is considered to have broken those provisions, rules, or orders) of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, amended 2022 for engaging the hulla team to carry out such heinous activity.
