Create a Racial Diversity Counselor Position at Munster High School

The Issue

The public school systems of Munster Indiana are ever growing and ever diversifying. However, the increasing population of students of color possess essentially little to no representation in the administrative board.

This petition is to implement an experienced social worker, psychologist, or counselor of color to aid students of color in a predominantly white school system. This position would also function as an advocate or mediator to administrative board members when addressing topics of race in the school

Black and brown students suffer everyday at the hands of racial slurs, prejudice teachers, and lack of representation at the school. It is absolutely essential that these very same students have an outlet and feel secure in having someone to talk to about their unjust experiences.

Munster is an every changing and ever growing city. We are becoming a melting pot of background and cultures, and the city now must be able to welcome everyone.

I applaud this effort and believe that a racial diversity counselor would be a great resource to help ensure black and minority students at MHS have a feeling of safety, confidentiality, belonging, and opportunity. These are rights that should be afforded all of our youth. I believe in the goal of "requisite diversity" which means that the makeup of an organization should have the same mix of diversity on the inside as the body it serves on the outside. If the School Town is able to make this position work, it would be a good step toward that goal. I also believe that our school system is the heart of our community. Each positive investment that makes our schools more effective for students also delivers a profound benefit our entire community. The youth of America is speaking. It gives me hope. As a coach, I know the power of listening. As an elected official, I know the power of action. Thank you for creating this initiative and for doing so respectfully and thoughtfully. Best of luck!
