The Issue

The current Sydenham branch of the Kingston Frontenac Public Library is under threat as the municipality of South Frontenac seeks to expand its offices. This library branch was purpose-built in 2013 to be a bright, warm community library, in a central location, with an accessible and environmentally-friendly design. It was also built with a mixture of private and public funding and backed by people of all political stripes: conservative, liberal and in-between!

The Sydenham branch is beloved in the village and surrounding communities. During non-pandemic times, it hosts children's programming, writer's groups, information sessions and various community organizations.

Small business owners, retired and rural folks who lack high-speed internet access at home, farmers, children and teenagers, at-risk and homeless folks, and people who require extra assistance... These are just some of the folks who frequent the library, in person, on a daily or weekly basis.

We who use the library branch regularly, and those who use it slightly less often, are fighting to keep the library in its current location, fully staffed at all times. The current building was designed to be a purpose-built and permanent solution to the many temporary library locations of the past, and lifts the spirits of all who enter. It is an invaluable resource in a central, accessible-to-all location. Please join us as we protect the Sydenham branch library, exactly as it is.
