Save Mundelein High Schools 4 Class Block Schedule
The Issue
Please let your voice be heard in supporting the continued success of Mundelein High School and its unique 4 class block schedule for the next generation.
Taking 8 classes is a lot harder and more stressful than 4! My child has flourished particularly because of the 4 class block schedule. It is much easier to manage 4 class schedules of homework, tests, quizzes and assignments than 8. The class load of 8 classes is double the work, scheduling, and double the stress. As a parent keeping my student flourishing, reducing stress is my top priority. Having watched and supported the movement "The Race to Nowhere", keeping everything in check is a juggle, especially when you have a child with high aspirations. The top colleges in the country require a lot in addition to high grade point average, so reducing the stress level and making sure my busy junior learns, grows, explores, matures, has a safe environment, supports integrity, all while "enjoying" her life right now - in the present, is my goal.
One of the reasons spoken for changing the 4 Block schedule is a math gap (and other classes this might apply) which is students forget math procedures and formulas needed for the next session of math because it was 2 terms ago. Currently they are doing refreshers at the beginning of class but are worried its taking too much time away from the current class they are now in. I think giving a refresher at the beginning of the class or encouraging a student to seek the math lab for help is normal, healthy and reflects REAL LIFE situations and resolution skills kids NEED to experience to succeed in this world. I reflect on my own life experiences, especially starting new jobs and the training within new jobs; learning new procedures, systems, directives, staff, etc it is always difficult to remember everything. Sometimes you learn systems in training you won't use for several months or years which by then you've forgotten. In real life we go ask for assistance, for a refresher on that system or directive, etc. So seeking assistance and "teaching to seek assistance" should be commonplace and give kids a chance to experience real life learning situations and problem solving skills that will be useful in their futures. So teaching to OVERCOME math gapped students would be a good life skill, whether its in the classroom or the math lab.
Another reason for possibly changing the block schedule is to address sleep deprived teenagers. We believe the attempt to overcome sleep deprived teenagers is really the parents job. Starting later and ending later we don't believe will change anything except that they'll stay up later.
The MHS school board is asking for the communities opinion. Please sign this petition showing the board you do have an opinion and want to save the 4 class block schedule.
