Mumbai's Right to Green

The Issue

The shrinking of green spaces is resulting in the rise of temperatures.

RPG Foundation's nature:re is initiating the change. We're taking small actionable steps to transform public open spaces into habitats where native flora and fauna can flourish. To enable this goal, we are redesigning public parks like Shantivan in Malabar Hills and Captain Namdev Lotankar Garden in Mahalakshmi, in partnership with Bruhanmumbai Municipal Corporation, that will function as ecologically-driven urban oasis.

60% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2030, causing intense pressure on urban green spaces. India recorded the highest temperature this year – 52.3 degrees celsius in 2024, surpassing the previous record of 49.2 degrees celsius set in 2002.

These refurbished open spaces will offer Mumbaikars much-needed respite. Educational trails and informative signage in these spaces will allow visitors to connect with nature in a meaningful way, fostering a deeper connection with the environment.
