On 15th January 2017, we lost our mother Snehala Karnik in a tragic hit and run accident while crossing the road on zebra crossing at Inorbit Mall junction Malad. The accident happened while the Nation was celebrating road safety week. This tragedy brought to light the lax road safety conditions in the suburbs and especially at popular residential junctions like the Inorbit Mall crossing in Malad. We have requested different authorities like MMRDA, BMC, Mumbai Traffic Police and Regional Transport Office to take actions to make the roads safer. Pursuant to our petition, MMRDA was the first to respond. We appreciate that they have reduced the height of barriers, pushed back the enclosures and ensured that there is a traffic marshal not only at Inorbit Mall but through out on Goregaon Malad Link road. Our immediate request was to the Traffic Police to install a speed breaker on Goregaon Mulund Link Road to control the speed of water tankers and other vehicles especially during non-peak hours. This being a residential area with schools in the vicinity, vehicle speeding has to be controlled. After persistent follow-ups with BMC and Traffic Police, the speed breaker has now been installed. We now await further action from BMC and Traffic Police towards road safety.
