Last evening PI Shankar Jadhav visited the site where we lost our mother Snehala Karnik in a hit and run accident on 15th January 2017. We thank the residents of Acme Complex and Bangur Nagar Society for their support.
A request was handed to PI Jadhav, the excerpts of which are produced below. A copy of this request is also sent to BMC.
Sub: Installing Speed-breakers on Goregaon-Mulund Link Road to slow down speed of vehicles.
Dear Sir,
We would like to thank you for your time in understanding our concerns regarding pedestrian safety. On 15th January 2017, we lost our mother Mrs. Snehala Karnik in a tragic hit and run accident. The fatal accident occurred around 8 -8.30 a.m. on a Sunday morning at the junction of Inorbit Mall, Malad. Our mother was hit by a speeding water tanker.
In the interest of safety of other pedestrians, we request you to install 2 speed breakers & few more urgent measures:
1. Install a speed breaker immediately on the GMLR Rd. before the traffic signal of Inorbit Mall.
2. Install a speed breaker immediately on the GMLR Rd. before the Rustomjee junction traffic signal.
3. Dark & visible re-painting of Zebra lines and a yellow line before Zebra crossing so that vehicles stop before the Zebra lines and not on the Zebra Lines.
4. Immediately fix the CCTV camera which is not working at this junction of Inorbit Mall, Malad.
In the near future we would need:
1. Pedestrian subway to cross over to Inorbit Mall from GMLR since 8 lanes converge on this road. Foot-over bridge is not possible since there is a metro line coming at this junction. Hence we need a subway.
2. Speed limit of 40kms in our residential area for all Water tankers, Trucks and BMC Dumpers.
These speed breakers will slow down the speeding vehicles that treat this road as a highway during off-peak hours. Huge water tankers and BMC dumpers ply at a full speed on this road between 5am and 9am which is very risky for pedestrians. Hence speed breakers will force them to slow down.
In the morning hours this road is used by school going children walking down to D.G.Khetan International School or Radhakrishnan Vidyalaya. Inorbit Mall is a popular destination and attracts a lot of crowd from the surrounding buildings. On both sides of the roads there are residential apartments, namely Acme Complex, Acme Enclave, Bhoomi Classic, Kalpataru, etc.
A lot of senior citizens are using the road for their morning walks or crossing the road to go to Nirankari Park. Since this road is mainly surrounded by residences, schools and a mall, desperate measures need to be taken for the safety of citizens.
We, therefore request you to install the speed breakers urgently. We also urge you to clear the footpaths and remove unlawfully parked vehicles for the sake of pedestrian safety. We have also attached letters from Acme Society supporting our demands.
