Mumbai Metro Rail Project: Ignorance or Indifference towards Public Safety?

Is it your ignorance of public safety or your indifference towards it, Mr. Madan (MMRDA Commissioner) and Mr. Murthy (MMRDA - Director of Projects) that is responsible for your callous response to a request for meeting? I had called up your office and as asked by your p.a. sent a mail requesting for appointment. The next day I followed up with your office and was told that the letter was forwarded to the Director's office for further action. Every single day of the week gone by, I have been calling up and being repeatedly told that the Director’s office will get back to us. We are still waiting for their response. In the meantime the apathy of MMRDA is putting public life at risk. Metro Rail is constructed for public convenience but it should not be at the cost of public safety. This is not the first time that residents of Goregaon-Malad link road have brought the hazards to public safety created by Metro construction to the notice of the Metro officials. The following are the dangers created by the ongoing Metro project: 1) The digging for lines has left no space for road crossing - we want temporary dividers created for road crossing, especially in residential areas used by pedestrians 2) Barricades are creating blind spots for drivers and pedestrians alike. The tall barricades are almost covering the signal posts too - We want the size of the barricades to reduce so that people are aware of the traffic from other side 3) No dividers for pedestrians to cross roads - The barricades have enclosed the dividers leaving no space for pedestrians to stand on while crossing roads putting them at risk of being hurt or injured 4) Safety Regulations - No basic safety rules and regulations are being followed to ensure public safety e.g. no barriers around areas where crane work is going on. 5) Plan work in intervals - On many stretches on the link road, digging is done but no work is going on. This is not only causing inconvenience but risking lives. I have tried capturing the hazards created by Metro works in the uploaded picture. Please note the barely seen signal, no place for pedestrians to stand while crossing roads, the blind spots created for drivers and the car under the crane. A Rs. 5,000 crore metro project and yet it seems that the concerned and responsible people have given little thought to planning, convenience and public safety. Is it not your job Mr. Commissioner to ensure that the execution of this project is as per acceptable standards? Is it not your job Mr. Director of Projects to ensure public safety? Or is public life of very little value in front of a five thousand crore project? On 15th January 2017, our mother was killed in a fatal hit and run accident while crossing road at the Inorbit Mall, Malad. She was hit on a zebra crossing by a speeding tanker. But her death was not in vain. She brought to attention the urgent need for road safety in our area (Goregaon-Malad and Goregaon – Mulund Link Roads) and the various dangers of Road crossing that our Senior Citizens and young kids are exposed to. So before any more accidents take place, will the MMRDA wake up, take responsibility and put some immediate safety measures in place?
