Mulberry Square - Designate Abandoned City Lot as Public Square in Paterson, NJ
The Issue
As a born and raised Patersonian, I have witnessed the abandoned city lot on Fair Street Market stand and decay for my entire life. It's always bothered me how much wasted potential sits in our downtown district, completely unutilized, and in many cases, these empty spaces are the very cause of decline in our city. These abandoned properties attract crime, drug abuse, homelessness, and even become fire hazards, all of which place a significant burden on our city and tax system.
My team and I have already volunteered much of our personal time over many days toward a large scale cleanup of the area. In this time we have found everything imageable at this site such as; clothing, beer bottles, car parts, contraction debris, general trash, and of course many many needles! This site would not need much more work in order to activate a majority of its potential. But we simply need your help to secure its future as a property owned and managed by the people of Paterson. So the first big step is to make sure it remains a public asset (like a park) and that's what this petition is all about.
Designating the vacant lot on Fair Street Market as an official public square could breathe new life into our beloved city. Imagine a vibrant meeting ground for arts, culture, and entertainment that provides a space for community gatherings, festivals, farmers markets, and live performances. Such a development will not only revive the area but offer a platform for local artists and entrepreneurs to showcase their talents and businesses, further invigorating our local economy.
Research indicates that public squares increase property values in surrounding areas by up to 10%, according to a study by the International Journal of Urban Planning. Additionally, cities with robust public squares see a boost in tourism and local businesses, contributing to a significant reduction in crime rates and a more cohesive community spirit.
Converting this overlooked space into a public square would not just eliminate an eyesore; it would transform our community. Such a vibrant hub would foster a sense of belonging, improve safety, and enhance the quality of life for all residents of Paterson. This public square can become a cherished space that reflects the diverse spirit of our city.
By signing this petition, you support the vision of transforming the abandoned lot into a dynamic public square. Let's work together to unlock the potential of our downtown district, creating a safer and more prosperous Paterson for generations to come.
