Increase Express Bus frequency serving the College of Staten Island

The Issue

Express bus service to and from the College of Staten Island has been drastically reduced. The former x10 route, which served as the only direct express bus between CSI and Manhattan will be replaced by the SIM4c. This new bus route  arrives at the front of CSI about 9AM,with the last bus leaving CSI at 7:20PM. It is a 15 minute walk from the front of CSI to the classrooms. This schedule cuts 1 bus in the morning and 3 buses in the evening. Classes begin at 8AM and end as late as 10PM.

CSI is Staten Island's only public third level college serving over fourteen thousand students, professional and academic staff.  Without direct express service to accommodate our schedules, student enrollment and faculty/staff recruitment will suffer immensely. What was once a 1.5 hour one-way commute will be 2 hours or more with the transfers needed. To arrive on time we would have to pay $6.50 for the SIM3c or SIM1c and then transfer to an additional S93 local bus for $2.75 in Staten Island (we already use one free transfer to get to the express bus).

On behalf of the reverse commuters, I petition the President of the MTA and the Borough President of Staten Island to restore the schedule that has been in effect for the past 15 years. Here are our solutions:

- Provide direct SIM4c Manhattan-Eltingville service to CSI to cover 8-9am.

- Provide additional SIM4c late evening service after 7:19pm leaving CSI.

- Expand the S93 local service to bridge this reduction in express service.

- Restore 4c stop at Willowbrook Road and Victory Boulevard (in front of the Mobil gas station), so that express riders have the option to transfer to the S93 to go directly into campus.

- Change the SIM3c route back to Victory Blvd and add a CSI stop.

the College of Staten Island is now the 3rd most popular destination on Staten Island, to cut express bus service there smacks of halting opportunity for students faculty and the community at large. Restore CSI express buses!!!
