Stop your plan to bait, trap, corral and KILL deer, pleas use humane measures to control the population instead
The Issue
The city of Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, is planning to cull deer by luring them into corrals and gunning them down in front of one another—a horrifying experience for any species.
Lethal initiatives like this tear families apart, leave young and weak animals vulnerable to starvation and dehydration, and actually accelerate breeding among survivors and newcomers.
PETA has apprised Mt. Lebanon officials of the futility and cruelty of lethal initiatives, but to no avail. Please attend the Mt. Lebanon Commission meeting and PETA's demonstration to urge city officials to end this needless suffering in favor of humane control methods.
The municipality received the green light Tuesday, February 17, 2015 from the Pennsylvania Game Commission to trap and shoot deer through March 31 with services to be provided under contract with Wildlife Specialists LLC of Wellsboro in Tioga County. The cost is $500 per deer with a target of 150 and a ceiling of $75,000.
The contractor is in the process of setting up traps and baiting them, according to Susan Morgans, municipal spokeswoman. Letters were sent Tuesday to residents who live near the areas where the animals will be corraled — the municipal golf course, the conservation district off Connor Road, McNeilly Park, Bird Park, Robb Hollow Park and Twin Hills Park. All places these innocent animals know to be their home!
When I received an email from a friend about the municipalities plan for the deer, I was shocked. I have always known Mt. Lebanon to be a family oriented, place of community for both humans and animals alike. In fact, Mt. Lebanon's slogan is "A Community with Character". If baiting, trapping, corralling as a means of killing lies at the heart of a community with character, it is truly a sad day for us all. The commissioners need to remember the suburban community grew from rural roots, a land where the deer could roam freely and be in harmony with nature and man.
Although the the municipality is pursuing another method, surgical sterilization, it is the third option. Mt. Lebanon Commissioner Kelly Fraasch consistently has opposed using lethal measures to reduce the population. Her point of view drew support at last week’s meeting of commissioners, when a group gathered to present a petition to the municipality opposing the killing of deer. Laura Simon, wildlife ecologist for the Humane Society of the United States in Washington, D.C. says her organization supports efforts to render deer infertile. There are well-publicized sterilization programs in communities throughout the United States including Cayuga Heights, N.Y., and Fairfax, Va., and we want Mt. Lebanon to implement the program too instead of moving ahead with their intended plan.
We challenge you to be a community with character not a community of inhumane killing! Be a community that cares!
