Stop MSU moped parking changes

This petition had 5,216 supporters

Starting fall of 2017, MSU police will not allow students to park their mopeds at bike racks. Instead, they will have limited moped parking lots in which owners will be required to purchase a permit, just another way to squeeze a dollar out of MSU students. The main advantage of having a moped is the ability to park it at a bike rack, and that right should not be taken away from students. Sign this petition to show MSU police that we should still be allowed to park at bike racks.

"Beginning August 30, 2017, motorized moped type vehicles will no longer be permitted to park at bicycle racks. Instead, these vehicles will be required to purchase a permit and use designated moped parking areas on campus. The moped registration fee will be $50 for a one year permit. Designated moped parking areas will be conveniently located throughout campus."

Recently, at the recommendation of the All University Traffic and Transportation Committee, the MSU Police Department proposed the above changes to mopeds on campus. While they state that the changes will be used to "promote pedestrian safety" and "provide needed bike parking space at the bike racks," many stakeholders believe this is simply a ploy to increase parking fine revenues at the expense of Michigan Sate students. There have been few, if any, moped/pedestrian accidents on campus as it is already illegal to ride mopeds on sidewalks. In addition, bike rack parking space has rarely been a concern due to the presence of too many mopeds, even during the warmer months.

What metrics did the Police Department and the T&TC use to make their claims and arguments? Did they even reach out to moped-owning stakeholders to understand our side of the argument? We need answers and we need our voices to be heard. We will propose and find efficient solutions to this issue.
