Bring Back 2nd Chance breakfast at Glen Burnie High

The Issue

There is different stories I’ve heard about why Mr.McGuire took away second chance breakfast. One is that there was an incident between an administrator and a student. The second story is that there was too many incidents of people using second chance breakfast as a tool to get away with being late to their 2nd period class.

The issue with with the supposed incident with a student and administrator is not a just reason to punish the rest of the school. The same with the issue of students using second chance breakfast as an excuse to be late to their second period class.

There are many studies and first hand accounts from teachers that prove that group punishment is not a good punishment. It’s like giving everybody a parking ticket for one person parking illegally, or taking away everyone’s drivers license because of one driver’s DUI.

Second chance breakfast is a tool for many people at Glen Burnie High School. One that is abused by few but used for good for many more. I used to be one of the people who would abuse the power I had from second chance breakfast. The very little power it gave me. And as soon as I saw I was hurting myself with the misuse of the power, I stopped.

Second chance breakfast is used for good, to feed the hungry children that couldn’t get the first breakfast. For each student it’s a different case. But I’m usually not one of the students that miss it on accident. I miss it because I’m simply not hungry at that point in time because I woke up probably 30 minutes before getting to school, and by the time that first period is over, my stomach is rumbling in hunger.

All students at Glen Burnie know that second chance breakfast is a privilege, but not one that deserves to be taken away! Punish the students who don’t know how to properly act in the school. We don’t go to school to be treated like prisoners. And we hope you don’t go to your job to treat us like prisoners. We spend the entire day listening to teachers and being forced to follow rules and authority and be watched all day with very slight freedoms.

In conclusion Mr.McGuire we like what you want to do, make Glen Burnie High a better school. But there will always be stuff you do us students don’t like, and that’s not something to worry about. But it’s something simple as this. Please just listen to the students. Thank you.
