CITIZENS’ PETITION

For the enhancement of the St Sernin precinct and the protection of its archeological site

To Mr. Jean-Luc MOUDENC, Mayor of Toulouse

With regard to the City Council’s redevelopment project for the St Sernin precinct:

We request that thorough archeological excavation be carried out on the whole site, and not merely sample estimates taken during the works.

Without this, the destruction of the under-lying remains would represent a loss beyond repair.

We request too that the redevelopment project be re-considered after consultation so that:

- The remains of the cloister and the abbey may be displayed at their true value and integrated into a consistent comprehensive entity along with the Basilica and a museum devoted to its history, which is indispensable.

- This invaluable national heritage may be passed on to future generations and the need to protect it from all risk of damage or vandalism be stressed. (The West Front requires urgent restoration and the protection provided by the iron railings needs reinforcing).

- As a result, the site as a whole would be a major asset for Toulouse in view of its bid to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
