Reopen the Pearl Bay Avenue Rat Run

Nicola Chandler started this petition to Mr Duncan Gay. Minister for Roads

The reopening of the trial closure is important for the following reasons:

 Compression of all traffic during peak hours have increased commuting time by a minimum of 40minutes if there is no breakdowns &/or accidents. It has been recorded & experienced with an accident the commute to the City has taken up to 2 hours.
 Clear safety risk to such volumes of traffic being left with no alternative, emergency egress for 5kms on one of Sydney’s busiest roads.
 Parriwi Road exit / alternative passage to Spit hill was closed in 2006 which compressed vehicle access & traffic flow southbound.
 In 2009 it was reported Spit Road carries 78,000 vehicles daily, including extensive use by buses moving up to 60,000 passengers between the northern beaches, Mosman and the city. The collective population growth of the three councils (Manly, Pittwater & Warringah) is reported to be 3.9% so the vehicle use would have grown organically inline with the population.
 Traffic volume data & traffic count technology was not considered to research the impact such a closure would have on the commuting public.
 Mosman council has refused to consider alternate solutions such as speed humps, or chicanes
 Mosman council has not presented any statistics to support their claim traffic is a safety risk to the local residents.
 The scheduled 6month trial will actually be 7months as access to Pearl Bay Avenue southbound has been closed since the commencement of the school holidays in December 2012 & has not been accessible as reported until the commencement of the trial 29th January 2013.
 The closure of Pearl Bay Rat Run demonstrates total disregard to the value of lives, disregard to the value of people’s time, employment & collective safety. These changes were made with seemingly little analysis; they are careless & ill considered.
